a5c7b9f00b Los Angeles and other cities around the world are being bombarded by meteors that seem to be slowing down once they hit the earth's atmosphere. The earth is suddenly being invaded by space aliens that have landed off the shore of LA, and who begin killing everybody along the beach. The military is ordered into action. Marine Staff Sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), who was about to retire, is reassigned to a new platoon. The platoon, flown by chopper to the forward operating base at Santa Monica Airport, is being led by a new 2nd Lt. Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez). They are sent on a mission to rescue some civilians who are trapped at the police station within alien territory. They only have 3 hours to complete their mission and get out before the Air Force bombs that zone. After a meteor shower around the world, the governments learn that it is actually an alien invasion and organize counter-attacks. In Los Angeles, the Marine Sergeant Michael Nantz is ready to retire after a great trauma in the past when he lost all the men under his command in a mission. However, his platoon is assigned to bring the civilians that are sheltered in the Police Department, in an area dominated by the aliens, back to forward operating base (F.O.B.) before the bombs drop on the city. Sgt. Nantz assists 2nd Lieutenant William Martinez and they have to accomplish their mission within three hours. The marines meet few civilians and survivors from other commandos and when they are ready to fly to the base, the helicopter with the wounded marines is shot down and crashes. Now the marines need to reach the base with the civilians through the destroyed streets and highways using a bus. Along their journey, the marines learn how to kill the invaders but only a few of them survive. When the mission is accomplished, Sgt. Nantz and the survivors decide to destroy the alien communication center and consequently their airborne force. I just watched this flick with some mixed feelings. It's not that bad, the effects used are okay, a lot of CGI but worth it. The acting is okay too but what does fail f or me is the storyline. If you have seen District 9 then you know what you will get. The mother ship did even remind me of the one in District 9. On the other hand I also was reminded of Skyline, the sudden attack of aliens here on earth. But this flick here has more to do with a war flick then with a science-fiction or even a horror one. You do see some aliens but they are just soldiers fighting for their planet. So I could say, a Vietcong flick with aliens instead. You know the story, a sergeant loosing his platoon and having a bad name is coming in to serve for another platoon, they hate him but he becomes a hero. So that have we seen a thousand times before, Platoon for example. To conclude, original in the way it's marines vs aliens, a failure due the fact that the aliens are just targets. But due the excellent acting I have given it a 6. This is the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. The camera was shaking too badly throughout the movie, that induced nausea in my wife and I. We almost walked out of the movie but we did not want to waste our money. So we sat through the movie but it was honestly a torture. The storyline was very straightforward, no twist, a kid can think of it. It's just shooting everywhere throughout the movie and very chaotic. I strongly recommend that you do not watch this movie, do not even buy a DVD on this movie unless you want to vomit. Or maybe watch this movie when you get a stomach bug coz you will vomit anyway, so nothing to lose. Not a single arresting image is found amid the sci-fi rubble, though unintentional laughs eventually arrive courtesy of a cornball motivational speech by Eckhart's hero. Nantz, Imlay, Lockett, Harris, Adukwu and Santos are the only survivors.
